According to our classmate’s presentation, we’ve learned that if a person wanted to become a member of society, he or she must enculture to the particular ways and general style of life that constitutes its culture, and, as a consequence, becomes culturally competent (Taft, 1977, p. 130). Here are some descriptions to explain the terms “enculturation”, “acculturation”, and “deculturation”.
(1) Enculturation is part of the socialization process and begins with primary socialization.
(2) Acculturation includes ‘a combination of acquisition of competence in performing culturally-defined roles and attitudes with respect to that behavior (Taft, 1977, p. 146).’
(3) In a harmonious acculturation process a person acquires the cultural rules and language skills of the new culture and integrates them appropriately with his primary culture. In other words, his identity becomes bicultural.
(4) When an individual adapts to a new culture at the expense of his primary culture we speak of a process of deculturation, which may lead to assimilation accompanied by first-language loss.
(5) Learning a new language and becoming fluent in it, while at the same time maintaining or forgetting one’s mother tongue, are an integral part of cultural adaption.
The processes of enculturation, acculturation and deculturation will play an important role in determining bilingual skills and the bilingual’s cultural identity.
